1.6 What’s new in version 4.3?
- Polling
- BSCW allows users to create and manage polls. Polls provide
means to collect and evaluate the opinion of other users on certain
topics. BSCW provides an interface for editing, executing and evaluating
polls. Polls may be accessible to the general public or to the members
of a workspace only (see 6).
- Flow folders
- Flow folders are special folders that are moved from person to
person in order to get a certain job done. The new flow folders enhance
and replace the existing circulation folders in BSCW; incoming folders
and tasks are now integrated into the user’s personal task list
(see 8.2).
- Mobile access
- BSCW provides special interfaces for mobile devices ranging from
simple WAP devices to PDAs and SmartPhones with an integrated Web browser.
The WAP interface has been completely redesigned and augmented by a new
interface for PDAs and SmartPhones
(see 10).
- Integrated HTML editor
- Editors for browser based editing of HTML content have been
integrated into BSCW and will allow editing of Web documents and
workspace banners (see 4.3.3).
- Contact lists
- BSCW provides a new kind of object to collect address and
contact information in workspaces. Users may establish contact
lists to share contact data in workspaces and import/export contact
information to external applications
(see 4.5.4).
- Reminder and scheduler service
- BSCW features user-defined reminders based on a generic
scheduler service. Users may define alerts to appointments in
order to be reminded of an upcoming event in advance
(see 5.1).
Documents may be scheduled for resubmission
(see 3.2.1).
- Temporary external access to documents
- Users may send URLs of documents to both workspace members and
non-members, enabling anonymous access (via temporary tokens). This
allows external access to documents without the need to invite external
users or to send documents as attachments
(see 4.5.5.2).
- Freezing documents
- BSCW allows users to freeze documents (and notes) to mark
them as final. Frozen documents cannot be modified anymore until
explicitly unfrozen by either the owner or the system administrator
(see 4.8.7).
- BSCW event news feeds
- BSCW offers RSS news feeds to external news readers enabling
external access to BSCW events
(see 12.2).
- Various other improvements
- BSCW supports sessions per user, which enables a logout
function (see 2.2.2).
Discussion forums provide an improved view of individual notes.
The calendar offers recurring appointments, e.g. periodic meetings or
birthdays (see 5.1).
An additional document upload helper has been
integrated that allows convenient document upload to BSCW workspaces
(see 9.4).
A new simplified standard content search has been implemented allowing
document search based on content
(see 4.10.2).
Several performance improvements speed up the system (e.g. faster document
upload).
