3.7.4 Performance Management and Measurement

The leader of the project was professor emeritus Hans Andersin; the other member of the group was researcher Kari Nurminen.

The project has been going on since 1990. The work was performed in the context of the SIMSON programme of the Finnish Metal Industry Association and also the CIE-program of CAM-I, Inc. The result during 1996 was a paper that was presented at the Conference on Agile and Intelligent Manufacturing Systems October 2-3, 1996, Renselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy NY.

Successful application of new technology in industrial production requires thorough understanding on the actual problems and issues of the industrial enterprise and its operations. Systematic methodologies for this include approaches such as Continuous Improvement (Kaizen) and Business Process Re-engineering. An important step in all these approaches is modeling and measuring of business processes. The Performance Management and Measurement group concentrates on the identification and classification of various types of information technology based tools for measuring the various types of processes taking place in the pipeline of product life-cycle activities from customer orders to manufacturing and shipping.
