BSCW's action  Edit   lets you edit documents of MIME types text/plain and text/html directly on the server. Essentially, this means that you do not have to download the file and to upload the edited version as separate actions.

You can achieve a similar ease of use for other types of documents that you edit frequently: Scripts or macros can perform the necessary local tasks automatically. BSCW lets you trigger such scripts or macros by sending the files with extended MIME types. Your web browser may be configured to call the appropriate script or macro whenever it encounters a file with the extended MIME type.

When you have written such a script or macro for documents of a particular MIME type, instruct BSCW to add  Edit   to the action menus of documents of this type, and to append -edit to the regular MIME type of the document when you click  Edit   to download the document:

• choose  Options    Preferences   of the main menu bar;
• select the MIME types you want to  Edit   directly from the menu below Known editors:.
