Seminar on Knowledge Engineering
Spring 2001 (2 cp)

The Semantic Web - The evolution towards machine-understandable content formats

Description

The topic of the seminar are the structured representations for information on the Web to enable the processing by automatic tools. The seminar tries to provide an overview of relevant representations, standards, processing mechanisms, and applications.

Topics for talks

The seminar starts with talks about XML to establish the context for the talks about the semantic Web itself. The talks about XML will range from basic XML to XML Linking, XML Schema, XML Query, XML Style Sheets and XML Protocol. The topics after that will cover RDF (RDF Model and Syntax, RDF Schema, RDF Tools, and RDF and logics) that is as of now the representation format for the semantic web. Some applications of RDF are also covered, for example CC/PP, RSS, annotation, and DAML). Other talks include SHOE, Topic Maps, and ontologies.
