well, the configure script figures out that X11_DIR should be
/var/X/.X11-unix, but then it doesn't put it anyplace that does any good.
i'm not familiar enough with autoconf to be sure what the right fix is.
i can hack it in by hand for now.  did part of a patch get dropped?
